AbstractA red blood cell antigen polymorphism was demonstrated in red crucian carp with a series of serological procedures including isohaemagglutination, absorption of isosera and heteroimmune sera. This antigen system, named the S system, contained two dominant antigen factors, ''S1'' and ''S2'' as well as a null factor, ''SO''. Individuals tested had either one or two, or neither of the antigens, with the expression of four phenotypes, S1, S1S2, S2 and S0. The hybridological analyses between proposed phenotypes indicated that the genetic background for this system can be explained by a simple hypothesis based on three alleles, designated S1, S2 and S0, in one locus.
