Chinese alligator Alligator sinensis bellows often, but little is known about its function at present. In this study, bellowing behavior was monitored and analyzed in Anhui Research Center of Chinese Alligator Reproduction (AR-CCAR) from May to October, 2005. The results show that more than two alligators often bellowed together at the same time to form bellowing chorus from May to October. Comparing with non-mating season, it is notable that bellowing could congregate individuals inhabited far and near into the same pond in mating season (June). The alligators bellowed most often from 6:00 - 7:00 am and 11:00 - 12:00 am in the mating season, which were more than 12 hours ahead of the peak time when they copulated each other (about 0:00 at night). Our results indicate that the primary function of bellowing is to congregate individuals (both mates and females) into the same pond, and get prepared for searching mates and their multi-copulating afterwards.
