AbstractPapers in this issue represent results from a research programme changes in the biodiversity during retrogressive succession in the lakes along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which was supported by the "Pandeng Project" of China. The purpose of the programme was to investigate the changes in the biodiversity of phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrophytes, benthic invertebrates and fishes during retrogressive succession of the lakes, to evaluate the effects of stocking of grass carp and other fish species on the biodiversity, and to provide a scientific basis for the achievement of balance between fishery development and conservation of biodiversity. The programme includes four parts: (1) comparison of biodiversity in lakes at different stages of 4 retrogressive succession; (2) experimental study of the effect of grass carp stocking on biodiversity; (3) long - term changes in biodiversity in Lake Donghu; and (4) quantitative relationship between grass carp stocking and dynamics of submersed macrophytes.
