Concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon were documented during 1996-1997 in the outlet of Lake Dongting. On the average, DOC concentrations at Stations I-V were 10.93+-1.80, 10.73+-2.61, 9.70+-1.96, 9.77+-2.68 and 13.45+-2.22 mg L-1, respectively; POC concentrations at Stations I-V were 2.36 +- 1.30, 2.46 +- 0.69, 2.88 +- 0.77, 2.18 +- 0.36 and 3.65 +- 2.70 mg L-1, respectively. The POC/Chl a ratio in the outlet of Lake Dongting (the average 8220) was much higher than in other waters. There were no linear relationships between POC and chlorophyll a at all the five stations in the outlet of Lake Dongting, indicating that the share of phytoplankton-derived organic carbon was very low in the total POC in the water.
