The external structure and solutable proteins of chorion were studied comparatively in amphimictic fish, i.e. red goldfish, Carassius auratus red variety and coloured goldfish, Carassius auratus coloured variety, and gynogenetic crucian carp, Carassius auratus gibelio. The chorion surface was smoother in gynogenetic crucian carp than those in amphimictic fish. That is, the ridge and ditch on chorion were unclear in crucian carp. Contents of solutable proteins in chorion of gynogenetic crucian carp were slightly higher than in amphimictic fish, and electrophoretic pattern of chorion in crucian carp was characteristic of a protein band in district II with molecular weight of 10-5 dalton. The structure and composition of chorion were discussed in relation to the primary control of crucian carp eggs.
