Abstract | A bioenergetic model was constructed to estimate growth potential, feed requirement, and waste output in Chinese longsnout catfish (Leiocassis longirostris Gunther). The bioenergetic model was driven by three variables: ration level, fish size, and water temperature, using experimentally-derived values. Thus, the feed requirement model was based on accurate simulated growth potential. In experiment 1, the energy budget was investigated at five ration levels: starvation, 0.8%, 1.6%, or 2.4% of the fish body weight per day, and apparent satiation. In experiment 2, additional parameters were determined in four rearing temperatures (20 degrees C, 24 degrees C, 28 degrees C, and 32 degrees C) using fish of 17, 36, 67, and 303 g. In experiment 3, values were estimated using the bioenergetic model, then validated in an independent 104-day experiment in which triplicate groups of fish were fed one of three rations based on the bioenergetic model: maximum, optimum, or 80% of the optimum (g/individual/day). No obvious bias in growth estimates was found during the validation trial. The model predicted final weight within 7.4% and feed conversion efficiency within 13.4% of corresponding measured values. Fish fed the optimum feeding rate reduced 17.5 g more total nitrogen and 4.0 g more total phosphorus per kg weight gain, compared to fish fed at the maximum rate. Thus, this model could be useful for aquaculture management of Chinese longsnout catfish. |
