AbstractEstimation of in situ growth rate of algae is an important aspect of phytoplankton community ecology. The FDC (frequency of dividing cells) technique provides a good base of the estimating process. There will be a problem being faced, however, when applying the method of 24-hour based diel patterns of FDC, i.e., are there any differences of the in situ growth rate estimations in different sampling periods? Therefore, a 37-hour continuous monitoring was carried out in a typical eutrophic water-body (Xiangxi Bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China), where a large-scale Microcystis bloom occurred for the first time in summer 2008, to study the variations of FDC values and compare the difference of in situ growth rates of Microcystis in different sampling periods. The result showed that cell division of Microcystis does not have a remarkable diel pattern of high in daytime and low in nighttime, and total phosphorus (TP) is a main factor influencing the FDC. The in situ growth rates ranged from 0.11 to 0.18d(-1) in time scale periods with an average of 0.14 d(-1) influenced by nutrient concentration, water temperature and chlorophyll a.
